Diary of a Fasting Girl : Entry 2, Day 19

Well, so much for this blog series. It’s not like I don’t have anything to write about, it’s that I don’t really have the time to write much these days ever since I started my summer internship at National Zakat Foundation. I am so tired by the end of the day that my brain is in no condition to be creative or otherwise. Whatever time I can scavenge goes towards making my comics, which too have slowed down in this time.

And now that I have put my excuses forward, let me tell y’all something. I have realized, after being deprived from it for hours a day during the month of Ramadan, that water is the most underrated thing in most people’s lives. Honestly, after a full day of fasting, the thing that appeals most to me is a tall glass of chilled water, fresh and crisp. The way it washes away all fatigue and renews the strength within the body, the way it imbues life in parched soul … ooof. So good.

Until it’s not taken away from us, we humans tend to take everything for granted, whether it’s relationships, good community, food, youth and in this case, water. We’re happy knowing that it’s there but we don’t do anything to preserve it or feel consciously grateful for it. But once it’s yoinked away from us for whatever reason (in this case, fasting), the appreciation pours in like raging river.

So what I am trying to get at is, appreciate what you have when you have it, not when it’s no longer part of your life. Don’t wait til you can’t have it anymore to be grateful for it.
